💚 The Story of Make Mental Health Matter

At Make Mental Health Matter, we believe mental health isn’t optional -it’s essential. We exist for the people who feel unseen, unheard, or unprepared and we equip them with the courage, words, and tools to change that.

We stand by the ones quietly carrying the weight of the world: the helpers, the caregivers, the parents running on empty, the youth holding secrets they don’t know how to share, the veterans who’ve seen too much, and the survivors who never asked to join “the club no one wants to be part of.”

We’re not just raising awareness, we’re taking action to make conversations about mental health, suicide, and recovery both normal and life-saving.

Our mission is to empower humans with the knowledge and skills to navigate difficult conversations about mental health, substance use, and suicide because open, educated conversations save lives.

Through our LoveLife L;ve Program, we’re filling the gap so people don’t have to choose between paying bills and taking care of their mental health. This program provides low-cost access to mental wellness for those with limited resources or high-deductible insurance, helping eliminate barriers, shorten waitlists, and collaborate with coaches and providers who care. Most importantly, it gives people their power back to care for themselves, prioritize self-love, and take action toward healing.

Our Give Youth a Voice program will empower middle schoolers to lead the movement for change - built by youth, for youth - so they can learn to express themselves, support peers, and speak openly about mental health.

And through the Make Mental Health Matter Show, we amplify real voices - of loss, hope, and resilience -reminding people everywhere that help and hope still exist.

Everything we do, whether it’s training, storytelling, or community outreach is guided by our A.C.E. approach: Action. Conversation. Education. We focus on prevention, intervention, and postvention, walking beside people at every step of their mental health journey.

We are educators, connectors, and advocates for hope. Because we aren’t just saying mental health matters, we’re taking action to MAKE mental health matter.

💫 Join the Movement

You don’t have to be a therapist or expert to save a life, just someone willing to learn, listen, and show up. When you take a class, volunteer, sponsor an event, or simply share the conversation, you help break stigma and build hope. Together, we can create a world where no one feels alone in their struggle.
Join our movement whether through volunteering, becoming a monthly Warrior for Mental Health donor, coming to an event, taking a class, taping into our programs or sharing our nonprofit with others. You can help create a wave of action to MAKE mental health matter.

The Founders Story
by Kelli Melissa (Hansen) Reinhardt

I lost my middle sister Carrie to a completed suicide on Feb 20th, 2017. She was the one sister that I grew up with the most as I am the baby of 5 girls. Carrie was the person I went to for everything. It was devastating when she died. I knew that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of people even if it was only 1 person at a time. I wasn't sure how to do that and was hyper focused on the suicide prevention aspect since that was how my sister passed.

I had never been suicidal myself, although I was a cutter in middle and high school, but I never had the intention to die by suicide. It was a way for me to feel something...it was a release for me, in a weird kind of way. Also a learned behavior and a negative coping mechanism, as I now know and understand today.

I was introduced to Mental Health First Aid and started gaining tools, certifications and learning more about mental health, the brain and the reason why people choose to take their own lives. Through this education I learned that a mental health challenge is generally what leads to suicide, so I decided to shift the focus to mental health more. I found that if we can get to the root cause, which is generally a mental health challenge, then we can ACTUALLY save lives. I never ever wanted another family to have to go through what my family did.

Having this education, understanding and knowledge was so impactful in my life that I knew this was what I needed to give back to the community, so the whole focus of the nonprofit shifted to mental health and suicide awareness.

The nonprofit idea was born in 2017 and became official in 2018 as the registered 501c3 nonprofit organization BCC Evolution.

"BCC" stands for "Because Carrie Cared". BCC also reflects on the theory behind Blind Carbon Copy emails, a person’s name is on the "bcc" line and they do not know who else's name is there. It is hidden and that is how I thought about a Mental Health challenge, it is there, but you may not know it is there. The goal was to get the hidden names listed on the "bcc" line to the "to" line so that people feel seen and do not feel alone. Opening up the conversation about mental health, to start breaking down the stigma. You cannot always see a mental health challenge or know how to address it until it is too late, and then a life is lost to suicide. And "Evolution", because we are ever evolving.

However as time went by the name BCC Evolution became more of a barrier than we knew it was going to be, since it has nothing to do with mental health or suicide prevention. The more and more we were trying to spread our message and bring more awareness of our services we found that BCC Evolution was not sticking in people's minds. We often heard BBC instead of BCC or having to always explain the name everywhere we went. So the decision was made to shift our name to our tagline: Make Mental Health Matter which is more in alignment with what we do. We aren't just saying mental health matters, because there isn't much to those words, we are truly taking action to MAKE Mental Health Matter through educating everyday people like you and I that can help save a life.

We continue to shift our focus, as needs in the community arise and that is something I pride myself on... showing up for those that need a voice and being flexible in the work that we do to fill in gaps. Our way is not the only way and collaboration and connection is key.
